Maybe you’re worried about staying safe in your own bathroom, or maybe you’re trying to keep a loved one safe. It can be hard to know the best way to keep a senior safe in their bathroom—which changes can make the bathroom safer? Theses bathroom safety tips for seniors are here to give you some ideas.

Safeway Step

Among our other bathroom services, The Tub Pros offers the Safeway Step as a bathtub conversion option. This upgrade can be an important step towards saying safe in the bathroom. Stepping over the edge of a bathtub to get into or out of the shower can be dangerous. For seniors who need help getting into or out of the tub but are looking to stay independent or for caregivers trying to keep loved ones safe, this conversion could be a good option.

The Safeway Step makes getting into the shower safer and easier without the expense of ripping out the existing tub and installing a new one. The installation process involves lowering one side of the existing tub and fitting the cutout with the Safeway Step. This lowers the height of the step needed to get into the shower. The Safeway Tub Door offers a watertight door so you can still fill the tub to take a bath.

The step can be installed on most tubs, including fiberglass, acrylic, cast iron, and steel. With an installation time of 2 – 4 hours, there’s no need to worry about giving up your bathroom for a lengthy conversion process.

Add Safety Features

While we’re installing the Safeway Step, you may also consider adding grab bars, benches, or a handheld shower head. Bars can provide help getting out of bathtub and can be invaluable in preventing falls. Benches or a shower chair can make it safer and easier to shower, and a handheld shower head can help with showering while sitting on the bench.

Add Nonslip Mats or Grips

You may want to consider adding a nonskid mat on the floor of the tub or shower. Make sure that you choose a mat or tape that doesn’t create an additional hazard, such as one that will slide out from underfoot or that could be tripped over. If the bathroom floor could be slippery, additional mats can make getting into and out of the tub safer.

Change Storage and Lighting

Make sure to consider where you keep toiletries in the shower—you don’t want them to be out of reach or hard to get to. Consider different storage options or racks to make access easier. Make sure that the bathroom is well-lit—dimness or too much glare can lead to falls.
